Maasai Mara Diary – Day 4

Maasai Mara Diary – Day 4

This morning, we set out in our specially adapted safari-vehicles to see if the wildebeest was congregating near the river which normally ends up in them crossing. Sure enough we saw two crossings in the morning. In the Maasai Mara they say that wildebeest follow the rain. Basically if it rains on the other side of the river the animals know this and also know in a few days new fresh grass will sprout so they cross in the hope of finding fresh pastures. We all know the saying “The grass is greener on the other side…” The wildebeest seem to take this very seriously.

Whilst waiting for the animals to gang up and gain confidence enough to literally take the leap, we tried to work on long shutter speed images of the running wildebeest. I am very aware of that these type of images are a not everyones cup of tea but they are definitely a personal favourite of mine.

When the crossing starts thousands of animals is crossing the river and chaos breaks out. The crocodiles in the river arrives in the hope of a good meal, the hippos takes first row in the river and normally just watch the spectacle. Just like their fellow humans on the bank. Happy clients with memories for life and some great shots. A perfect morning in my books.

The highlight of the afternoon was a successful cheetah hunt. One female and her 3 adolescent cubs managed to bring down a thompson’s gazelle and their supper was secured for the day. To see the whole build-up of a successful hunt is amazing. From first noticing the gazelles in the distance to the stalking, the chase, the take down and finally the feast is something you don’t forget.
