Chameleons by Night

Chameleons by night in Malta. Photographic Workshop for individuals or groups in Malta

Question: “Are there Chameleons in Malta?”
Answer: “Yes”

The Mediterranean Chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) is not an indigenous species to the Maltese Islands but was introduced in the 19th century from North Africa. It is now found all over Malta and also on its sister island Gozo and is now considered naturalised.

It can grow up to 30 cm and varies in colour from a pale sand colour to almost black. It often has darker or lighter markings on its side. Besides changing colour, it puffs up its body and opens its mouth wide to appear larger and more fierce. Many assume the color changes undergone by the chameleon are a result of it is attempting to camouflage itself, when in reality the chameleon changes its color as a response to light and temperature stimuli and as an expression of its emotions. At night they are much lighter in colour.

The Chameleons are cold blooded animals and diurnal which means they are mostly active during the day. But trust me, if they need to move during the night they can and they will. If you prefer to see the chameleons during the day please read more here

You will be picked up from your hotel or any other accommodation (In Malta) at an agreed time and we will make our way to our location for the 2 or 4 hour photography session to photograph Chameleons by night. After a short introduction and demonstration of the supplied head lamps we will head into our location to start searching for the chameleons. If you have chosen the longer tour we will have a short break half way through where we sit down and enjoy some great local wine and snacks.

Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel and a head lamp during the workshop is included in the price.

Unlike most wildlife tours or workshops, we guarantee wild chameleons on this workshop. If not, your fee will be 100% refunded.

A tripod or a flash is recommended for night photography.
