Photographic elephant safari - Day 1

Updated: Sep 24

My first full day in Amboseli National Park was a hot, dry, and dusty one. I spent the morning with the famous big tusker Craig, one of Africa’s last remaining super tuskers. We found him late in the morning just outside the park. The sky was clear and the sun already high, not the easiest light to work with, but with an elephant like Craig you take whatever conditions you get and make it work. He was calm and relaxed, just as he always seems to be, carrying the kind of presence that reminds you why elephants are among the most awe-inspiring subjects to photograph.

In the afternoon we turned our attention to the large herds moving back from the swamp. Finding the right spot is never easy, and once a group passes it is time to move and reposition, hoping for a second or third chance with the same herd. The work is busy but incredibly rewarding. Days like this are what inspire my elephant prints, each image a way of bringing the scale and spirit of Amboseli into a form that can live on a wall far from the savanna.
