New Print Release - Kovu

Updated: Oct 13

I am pleased to announce a new addition to my fine art collection, a portrait of a leopard named Kovu. Also known as Scarface, Kovu is one of the most recognisable big cats in Laikipia, a region of Kenya that I recently explored in search of its elusive wildlife. Laikipia is home to a remarkable mix of predators, but even here, leopards are famously difficult to find. Photographing Kovu was both a challenge and a privilege.

This portrait captures him in striking detail. The scars on his face are not just marks of age but symbols of survival. Each one tells a story of the battles he has endured to hold his ground and secure his place in the wild. Kovu is more than just another leopard. He is a dominant presence in his territory and part of a lineage that continues to shape the future of Laikipia’s leopards.

There is also a deeper connection that makes him especially significant. It is believed that Kovu could be the father of Giza Mrembo’s cubs, the female black leopard who has captivated so many with her rare melanistic coat. If true, his legacy continues not only through spotted offspring but also through the remarkable story of Giza herself, one of the most extraordinary residents of the Laikipia wilderness.

As with all of my fine art prints, this piece is produced on archival paper chosen for its ability to preserve depth, texture, and detail. Every whisker, every line of his scarred face, and the intensity of his gaze carry through to the final print. The result is an image that holds both power and mystery, reminding us of the untold stories written into every leopard’s life.'
