At around 12-15 months old, this young lion stands somewhere between the vulnerability of a cub and the independence of adulthood. The protection and familiarity of the pride are still an important part of life, but each passing month brings new experiences and lessons that will shape the years ahead.
 
Life for a young lion is a constant education. Watching the adults, learning the dynamics of the pride, understanding when to approach and when to keep a distance, and gradually developing the skills needed to survive in an unforgiving landscape. Play becomes practice, curiosity becomes experience, and the carefree days of early cubhood slowly begin to disappear.
 
I photographed this youngster early one morning in the Serengeti, standing alone for a brief moment and looking directly towards me. There was a wonderful stillness to the encounter. In that quiet morning light, the young lion seemed almost caught between two worlds: still dependent on the pride, yet already beginning the long journey towards adulthood.
