Breaking Free - Trading Careers

For many years, my life revolved around screens and digital design—creating everything from websites to logos. As a web and graphic designer, I enjoyed the creative process, but there was always a nagging sense that something fundamental was missing. Despite the satisfaction of seeing my designs come to life, a deep-seated dream remained: to step away from the virtual world and into the untamed beauty of nature with a camera in hand.

A Childhood Dream Rekindled

I have a vivid memory of sitting on my grandmother’s floor as a child, completely absorbed in a nature photography book. Each image was a portal to a wild, untamed world that ignited my imagination with visions of sweeping landscapes and incredible wildlife. This early fascination with nature stayed with me. Although I built a career in digital design, the dream of one day trading my digital canvas for the great outdoors only grew stronger, pushing me to eventually follow it.

Turning Dreams into Reality

Leaving behind a secure career was a daunting prospect. I had long shelved the idea of becoming a wildlife photographer, convincing myself it was too risky. The comfort and stability of my design career seemed safer compared to the uncertainties of freelancing in photography. But as time went on, I realized that delaying my dream would only push it further out of reach.

The pivotal moment came during a life-changing visit to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. While I had always enjoyed photography as a hobby, this experience was transformative. Immersed in the vast savannah and its wildlife, I found myself waking up before dawn to capture the sunrise and patiently waiting for hours to photograph a lion in its natural habitat. It wasn’t just the act of taking photos that captivated me—it was the profound connection with something larger and more primal.

Returning home, I knew it was time to pursue my true passion. The moment had come to make the change.

Taking the Leap

Leaving my job as a web and graphic designer was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever faced. It meant abandoning a stable income, a clear career trajectory, and a comfortable routine. Yet, the pull of wildlife photography was irresistible. I took a bold step, relying on the skills and creative vision I had developed as a designer, trusting they would be beneficial in this new realm.

The transition was challenging. Wildlife photography requires patience, a deep understanding of animal behavior, and adaptability to the unpredictable nature of the wild. Despite the hurdles, the field offers immense rewards. Every photography session brings a sense of fulfillment that I hadn’t experienced in my previous career.

New Perspectives and Skills

Venturing from a stable career into a dream profession isn’t easy, but it has been immensely gratifying. Wildlife photography has reshaped my view of life, teaching me the value of patience, the excitement of the unexpected, and the importance of pursuing one’s true calling.

Interestingly, many skills from my design background—such as composition, attention to detail, and storytelling—have proven invaluable in photography. The ability to create visual narratives and approach scenes from unique perspectives has enhanced my work behind the lens in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

Embracing My Passion

Today, I am thrilled to be a fine art wildlife photographer, crafting beautiful pieces for people’s homes. Additionally, through my safari company, Delaney & Siggesson Safaris, I share my passion by leading photography safaris that offer others the chance to explore and capture the wonders of nature. From photographing majestic elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park to capturing powerful lions on the Serengeti’s expansive plains, I’ve found my true calling.

The path isn’t always easy, and the challenges are real, but the moments of capturing perfect shots in the wild make it all worth it. For anyone feeling stuck or hesitant about pursuing their dreams, I offer this advice: take the leap. You may not know where it will lead, but following your passion will always guide you to where you’re meant to be.
