#087 - Frostborn
Hell's Valley, Japan - 2025
The Snow Monkeys of Hell’s Valley in Japan are true winter survivors, living in regions where snow blankets the ground for months. No other non-human primate lives farther north or endures a colder climate than these remarkable monkeys.
Japanese macaques are best known for their unique habit of soaking in natural hot springs. Seeking warmth, they travel to these steamy pools, huddling together to escape the bitter cold.
On this particular day, the conditions were some of the best I’ve ever had for photography in Japan. Fresh snow had just fallen, covering the ground in a clean, untouched layer of white and creating an ideal winter setting. To me, this image captures the balance of beauty and hardship that these monkeys face throughout the long, cold season.
