World Zebra Day 2026

A small group of grévy's zebra

Today is World Zebra Day, a moment to pause and appreciate one of Africa’s most visually striking animals.

Zebras don’t rely on colour to stand out. Their stripes create rhythm, contrast, and movement all on their own. In the wild, they can feel chaotic at first glance, but the longer you watch, the more structure and balance you begin to see.

Having photographed zebras across Africa, I’m always drawn to that tension between order and unpredictability. It’s what makes them so compelling to photograph, and why they translate so naturally into black and white prints, including a small number of zebra prints I’ve created over the years.

World Zebra Day is also a reminder that these animals face real pressures in the wild. Protecting their habitats means protecting far more than just a pattern. It means preserving entire landscapes and ecosystems.

Today, I’m simply grateful for the moments spent observing them, quietly, on the plains.
