'Beneath the Cloud' portrays the late Craig, one of Amboseli’s most famous elephants and one of Africa’s great super tuskers. Photographed head-on, his enormous tusks frame his trunk as he walks steadily towards the camera. Above him, a single white cloud hangs in an otherwise empty sky, creating an almost surreal balance between the immense weight and presence of the elephant and the lightness of the cloud.
The simplicity of the composition is what drew me to the scene. With nothing competing for attention, Craig’s size, age and character become the focus, while the isolated cloud gives the photograph its sense of space and its title. In black and white, the textures of his weathered skin and tusks stand out against the clean background, creating a portrait of an elephant who became an icon of Amboseli.
