#035 - Dinosauresque

Mabamba Swamps, Uganda - 2021
 
This bird, together with the gorilla and chimpanzee, was my reason to visit Uganda back in 2021. Amongst the papyrus in the Mabamba Swamp of Lake Victoria, the shoebill rules the shallow waters with an almost mythical presence.
 
Its slow movements and statuesque stillness create the kind of atmosphere that defines fine art wildlife photography, where patience and light come together to reveal something timeless. Resembling a creature from a long-gone era, the shoebill stands completely still for hours, its prehistoric appearance blending seamlessly with the primeval landscape.
 
Its large bill and piercing eyes make it one of the most fascinating subjects in wild bird photography, a challenge and a privilege for anyone behind the lens. With unwavering patience and keen focus, the shoebill waits for an unwary fish to swim within striking distance.
 
Being out in the small boat, drifting through the narrow channels of the swamp, was an experience I will never forget. The air was thick with the calls of countless birds. Kingfishers, jacanas, lapwings, and many others were all around, each adding to the rhythm of the place. The water moved softly beneath us, carrying the reflections of the papyrus and the passing clouds. In the middle of it all stood the shoebill, silent and perfectly still, as if time itself paused for its presence. Surrounded by so much life, I felt both small and deeply connected to the wild world around me. The scene later became part of my limited edition bird prints, a reminder of the quiet beauty and atmosphere of the Ugandan swamps.
